Early this morning Marvel Studios released the final trailer for its next upcoming film Thunderbolts*, and whilst it mightn’t feature any huge a-list heroes, this film should be getting your attention.

The Thunderbolts* after nearly 6-years since the last Avengers film finished and all the avengers supposedly disappeared, is addressing the question of who is left to protect the people now when a large scale threat emerges. The story centres around a team of villains and anti-heroes who are thrust together to save the world from a cataclysmic event. Check out the final trailer for it below!

The film is sparking a lot of comparisons between the Thunderbolts* and DC’s Suicide Squad with its ragtag grew up questionable characters forced to work together theme.

The one thing I’d argue above all else as to why this should be your movie of choice this year for all cape-flicks is the talented team behind the camera. Post-Endgame Marvel got into a bad habit of releasing many projects that were too similar in tone despite its varying themes and stories. Granted the last few runs of films has started to finally break away from the overly quippy, vibrant over the top colours, poke fun at the story fest it was doing and the Thunderbolts* finally looks to ground itself and move away from that firmly.

With an absolute slew of incredible behind the scenes talent that have worked on multiple A24 films, the Thunderbolts* looks to set itself apart with what happens off camera as much as what’s on camera. The film is directed by Jake Schreier (Writer & Director of Beef), Lee Sung Jin (Show runner of Beef) co-wrote the film with Joanna Calo (The Bear). Andrew Droz Palermo, is the films Director of Cinematography, known best for his cinematography on The Green Knight. The films composition is created by Son Lux, who composed the score for Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, and the Thunderbolts* has been edited by Harry Yoon from Minari. Holy crap that is one incredibly talented line-up of artistic film giants

The talent both on and off the camera has never been of this artistic quality for a Marvel project I’d argue. Yes prior Avengers films have been phenomenal and had great teams behind them, but the Russo Brothers grew big via their success with Marvel (and Community).

The Thunderbolts* might not look like much on the surface from what we’ve seen but it might just be the film to show the audience the passion, love, and artistic creativity behind making a Marvel movie. With an incredible team of passionate and elite creatives like that, plus the star studded cast it features, the Thunderbolts* has an incredible opportunity of not being just a good cape-flick, but a damn good film period.
