Australian scientists have created a ‘miracle’ pill that cuts the methane cows produce.
For the first time ever, the seaweed supplement pill has finally made its way overseas almost a decade after being discovered in Australia.
The pill that was made in Australia almost 10 years ago with the help of Meat and Livestock Australia and James Cook University and cuts the the methane emissions that cows produce when they release gas by up to around 90 per cent.
Michael Battaglia who is the CSIRO Towards Net Zero Mission director told news.com.au that the FutureFeed pill had just started to go to market with global partners.
“By getting lots of livestock using that we can help them not only reduce their methane but potentially grow faster,” Dr Battaglia said.
“Potentially because the methane they are producing is wasted energy.
In 2020 FutureFeed was awarded the Food Planet Prize for ‘its benefits to the climate and environment and contribution to a new global industry in seaweed farming.’
There is also an incentive for farmers to use the new pill because Dr Battaglia says that the pill is also said to quicken the rate that the cows grow and produce more milk which would to get the cows to “market weight faster.”
According to research, If just 10 per cent of global farmers adopted the use of the pill, it could have a similar impact as removing around 100 million cars from roads around the world and also has the potential to create enough food for an additional 23 million people world wide.
This news comes on the back of the CSIRO launching its initial $90m investment into a new initiative that hopes to halve emissions created by the steel and agriculture industries by 2035.
