A tropical low in the Coral Sea is expected to form into a cyclone today.

It is forecast to track near Norfolk Island over the weekend.

While the system isn’t predicted to make landfall we would still feel some impacts around the Townsville coastline.

The Bureau of Meteorology expects rough conditions for our beaches.

“We’re already seeing strong winds off the Central Coast of Queensland and we do have strong wind warnings out for large parts of the Queensland coast for today and into tomorrow. Pretty much have strong winds stretching down from Cardwell all the way down to Hervey Bay,” says senior forecaster Peter Otto.

Seas up to three metres are expected Thursday while winds could reach 30 knots.

“Gusty conditions on the waters and also on the coastal fringe there might be some damaging wind gusts at times over the next couple of days. But really the bulk of the impacts will be well and truly offshore,” says Mr Otto.
