Katter’s Australian Party has slammed the closure of Mt Isa’s copper mine, with mining giant Glencore announcing they will close the copper mine at Mt Isa by the end of July.
Glencore said that it is not possible to further extend the life of the underground mines.
“That’s bad news. We do need to keep that copper smelter or a copper smelter in the northwest,” Robbie Katter said.
The member for Traeger says the north-west mineral corridor plays a crucial role in the economy and Glencore’s decision has put 1,200 jobs are at risk.
“If there’s mining companies that don’t want to partner with Queensland people in extracting those resources and create the wealth there, if they want to park them up until it’s more convenient for them to mine them, well we should usher them off.”
