Charges laid over fatal crash near Ayr

A 39-year-old man has been charged over a fatal two-vehicle crash in Barratta, north of Ayr.

Police will allege the Giru man was the driver of a Mazda BT50 utility involved in the collision on the Bruce Highway, between Good Road and Lochinvar Road, around 4am on August 31.

A 68-year-old Tasmanian man was pronounced deceased after being transported to Ayr Hospital.

The 39-year-old man was not physically injured in the crash.

Officers from Townsville Forensic Crash Unit laid charges on Monday, December 19, following an investigation.

The Giru man been issued with a notice to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on January 24, charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death whilst adversely affect by an intoxicating substance.

He’s also facing one count each of driving a defective vehicle, using a mobile phone while vehicle is moving, and failing to keep left of double continuous lines.

These matters are in addition to charges already before the Ayr Magistrates Court, of failing to supply a specimen of breath roadside and failing to supply a specimen of blood on requirement.
